- Short Term SICS Training review@ MGM Eye Institute, Raipur, Chhattisgarh

If you don't pay attention or fail to answer questions, prepare to be scolded. But the trainer is good, ma'am genuinely strives to make sure you learn SICS well. Timings 9 am to 5 pm You get ur cases usually after lunch But you need to be in OT all day Accommodation available in campus, separate charges for that Cases given Mon- Sat Sundays off (They also have a short term phaco course but you can apply only if you've done 200 SICS minimum.)

Duration 2 yrs and 2.5 yrs Selection- written exam (true/false pattern) followed by interview next day They have two kinds of VR fellowship- - Clinical Fellowship (2 yrs of pure VR) - Clinical cum Research fellowship (first 6 months doing a study/project followed by 2 yrs of VR.. of course you'll be involved with the study over the course of your fellowship even after the first 6 months) You can choose which one you want to take, not compelled to go for research if you say you are not interested. 2 fellows taken for Clinical fellowship, 3 taken for Clinical cum Research but numbers can be variable Fellows taken every 6 months. No exit exam as of now but there are talks they might have an unofficial one from 2026 onwards. Stipend 55k (no caution deposit) No cataract training included You are started on surgeries from first month itself, you get steps in the smaller procedures like port making or SO removal etc You are posted every month in different depts like 1 month in Medical Retina, 1 month in Uvea, 1 month in Oncology, 1 month in diagnostics etc They have 18-19 consultants so every month, you are under a different consultant You get steps for all retina cases You also see OP but not allowed to dispose pts independently initially You get to do independent cases in the last 6 months of fellowship when you become an SR .. at that point, you are under a mentor and you see OP pts in your name and dispose them and also operate cases in your name (with the mentor overseeing as required) Medical retina exposure is good, you get retinal lasers and intravit injections in the 1 month you are posted there OP exposure is good, you see every kind of retina case here ROP cases are relatively less, it's mostly SRs who go with the consultants to pediatric hospitals and NICUs who get to do lasers, otherwise as a fellow your ROP exposure is mostly restricted to OTs when babies with stage 4/5 ROP are posted for EUA and then you get to see the fundus and learn screening and maybe do few lasers Oncology exposure is good Work timings officially 8- 5 pm but often goes late depending on pt load and when OT finishes Peripheral centre duties++ where you are posted to a centre in Andhra called Shri City for 2-3 days (over weekend) at a time in a month where you manage ophthal cases of all specialities You have 4-5 duties per month of night calls and ward calls (also involves enucleation duties) 1 Sunday duty in a month- 7am -7pm duty You also get a public holiday on call duty- again 7am - 7 pm No camp duties On call- you have night duties in the first 6 months of joining... but you hardly get any emergencies Academics- once weekly classes Very hectic fellowship but you get very good exposure to all cases and also get to do independent cases in the last 6 months (based on your mentor's discretion).
- Vitreo-Retinal Surgery Fellowship review@ National Institute of Ophthalmology (NIO), Pune
Duration 2 yrs 2 fellows taken every year- 1 FNB fellow (through FNB exam) and 1 institutional fellow (only interview) Exit exam + for FNB candidate Stipend 90k Phaco training included You are initially put on phaco simulator for phaco training. They also have a VR simulator and Sir sees how you do on the simulator first before starting you on live patients. VR OT runs every day. You are given steps in all retina surgeries till end of fellowship, however no chances to do independent cases. You get lots of retinal lasers and intravit injections. OP exposure is good, you see every kind of retina case here. ROP exposure is very less, another consultant sees the cases and you can request him to teach you screening. Oncology exposure NIL Very few scleral buckles done here No training in SFIOLs (even though they are done by the consultants) You are trained to put iris claws Cataract OT is once a week, you get 1 case per OT, you get only normal NS 2 cataracts, no advanced cases. So that's around 160-170 phacos over 2 years. You are allowed to manage your cataract complications (iris claw training+) Work timings long, starts at 7 am can go on even till 9 pm depending on pt load and when OT finishes. All Sundays are working days, you have to come in for research or paper related work every Sunday. No public holidays given. On call- you have night duties in the first 6 months of joining... but you hardly get any emergencies. They have 3 other centres within the city so you will have periphery postings by turn. Academics- no formal classes, mostly self learning. You get to do steps in all cases but not given independent cases at all so you will need to join elsewhere after fellowship to learn to operate independently and get better. Also, phaco refinement will be required (for advanced cataract cases) post fellowship.

- Glaucoma Fellowship review@ Agarwal's Eye Hospital, Chennai
Duration of fellowship - 1 year, might change to 1.5 yrs in the next intake in 2026 Selection- biannual intake (April/ Oct) You have to fill in the application, once you’re shortlisted there will be an interview. Fellows per session- usually 2 intakes per dept per intake but it might slightly vary. Stipend- 30k/ month Cataracts are given. SICS, phacos and very minimum trabs ( mostly 5 SICS, 30-50 phacos, 10-15 trabs) Can expect 40-60 phacos at least, can be more too. Depends on how many foreign trainees come for training during the time of your fellowship since cases are usually allotted first for foreign trainees and then to fellows and PGs. You might get complicated cataracts if competent. No iris claws given. Only glued IOLs chances given. No training in vitrectomy. OPD exposure is very good, the consultants are friendly and approachable. Yag caps and Yag PIs you get good numbers. There’s a good research team, everything is very well documented here, they often motivate you for research publications. It’s a standard work environment. The day depends on how many cases are posted in the OT, as the OPD starts after OT. 1 night duty/ month, 1 camp duty/ month, Sunday duties 1-2 . So you’re almost occupied the entire month. Work might start as early as 7.30/ 8.30 am, usually ends by 5.30 pm There’s no one-on-one training as such. You learn by observing, you can see the camp cases. You can approach the consultants and cross check your findings. Many MIGS and GATT cases are operated here by consultants. Wetlab trainings are given regularly. But, no hands-on usually given, might get a case or two. Peripheral postings + Monthly journal discussion and case presentations... along with that we get to attend the classes taken for DNB on our speciality topics. The only thing that was annoying was that the first 1.5 months is spent in "orientation" where you’re rotated in all sub-speciality departments to see how things work, felt it was unnecessarily long.

You get around 70-80 phacos (You are given only camp pts to operate and they are more common in winters, cases tend to be lax in summers when it's mostly private pts getting operated) No training for managing complications per se, usually managed by consultants No topical phacos. - Medical Retina Fellowship review@ Shroff Eye Centre, Delhi
(Please note- Shroff Eye Centre is NOT the same as Shroff's Charity Eye Hospital) Duration 6 months 1 fellow taken every 3 months Selection- interview Stipend 20k You start your day at 7.30/8 am and are posted with 2 retina consultants per day, 1 consultant in morning half and another in the afternoon You see retina OP and manage cases. No OT exposure per se but if you're interested, they will let you go to OT for observation You learn primarily retinal lasers and intravit injections- only in charity cases For this you are posted every Wed and Fri to 2 different charity clinics where you manage OP and bring pts in whom to do lasers & injections. You start giving intravitreal injections from 2nd month. You get to give around 20-25 injections over 4 months. Retinal lasers are given only in last 2 months (once a week).. so you get 8 laser postings where you do lasers all day (around 5 cases per day).. you get PRP, barrage, sectoral etc LIO is not given but you can request the consultant to teach you when a case comes. ROP exposure is minimal, very less cases come here. Uvea exposure is nil since that's handled by a separate Uvea dept Classes are there every week, you have to present by turn, usually 1-2 times in 6 months Dept is chill, consultants are friendly. Good program, esp for those who did not have much retina exposure in PG If you already know to do lasers/injections and only want numbers, this program may not be worthwhile.
