Updated: Feb 4
Duration 1 yr
Fellows taken on need basis/ random intake
Selection- interview including surgical interview (you need to be skilled in SICS)
Stipend- 35k for 1st 6 months, 40k for next 6 months
No admission fees/ caution deposits
Accomodation has to be arranged on your own
First 6 months you do SICS, next 6 months you do phaco
OT is thrice a week, you start with 1 case per OT
Case numbers are increased per OT based on your proficiency
You are in OT 3 days a week and OP 3 days a week
OP duty is mainly assisting senior consultants, you are not allowed to manage or dispose pts on your own.
On non-OT days, you will be busy giving blocks in OT
Work timings 9 am - 5 pm
But if posted for morning rounds then day starts at 7 am
Fellows are posted by turn for what is called evening rounds/ patient workup where you do pre-op workup for pts who are posted for next day's OT.. starts at 8 pm can go up till 11 pm
You get to select cases for your OT so you can choose advanced cataracts also (depending on your capability) which will be supervised by the senior consultant in OT that day
You may also get to do other procedures like Yag cap but you need to search them out from the camp pts and request the consultant for the same.. not given routinely
No periphery postings
No camp duties
No night duties
Sunday camp workup duties are there- assigned to fellows by turn
Dept is hectic
OT can get hectic when there is shortage of OT assistants at the fellow's table... there are 6 OT tables of which one table is assigned to fellows.. in case of assisting staff shortage, fellows will be required to assist the fellow who is operating.
Phaco program has started only this year so approx phaco numbers not available.. but they allow you to do as many cases as you are able to do per OT.
(Those who are not SICS proficient may not be selected for phaco program and will be required to do their Comprehensive program which is 1.5 yrs.. there, they train you in steps of SICS first and then increase your numbers)
